The Man Who Saved the World
I'm a wide reader but only now that I know, that on September 26, 1983 Lieutenant Colonel Stanislav Petrov the officer on duty at the Serpukhov-15 bunker near Moscow averted a potential nuclear war by refusing to believe that the United States had launched missiles against the USSR, despite the indications given by his computerized early warning systems. It's 23rd anniversary today, many thanks to the man who saved the world.
