Earth-like planet found

The new planet seems just right — or at least that's what scientists think.
For the first time astronomers have discovered a planet outside our solar system that is potentially habitable, with Earth-like temperatures, a find researchers described Tuesday as a big step in the search for "life in the universe." [Link]

GNOME Mobile and Embedded Initiative Launched

The GNOME Foundation announced today the creation of the GNOME Mobile & Embedded Initiative (GMAE), and a software platform for user experience development across a wide range of device profiles. Founding members include open source organizations and commercial interests such as ACCESS, Canonical, Intel, Debian, Nokia, Red Hat, Fluendo, the Linux Foundation, and Maemo.

100 Million iPods Sold

Gaim Renamed Pidgin

Gaim - the popular open source instant messaging program has been renamed Pidgin due to several legal issues with AOL and their AOL instant messenger (AIM).
After a long, and unfortunately secret debate (as we could not say why we were looking at a name change, we ended up just doing this ourselves), we settled on the name "Pidgin" for gaim itself, "libpurple" for libgaim (which, as of 2.0.0 beta6, exists), and "Finch" for gaim-text. Yes, the spelling of "Pidgin" is intentional, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pidgin. [Link]

French TGV train breaks record for rail speed
