openSUSE 10.2 Beta 1 Released
The first Beta release of openSUSE 10.2 has been released. This release is only available for i386 and x86_64 architectures and both as a DVD image and CD images.

Ubuntu 6.10 (Edgy Eft) Release Candidate Announced
The Ubuntu team is proud to announce the Release Candidate for version 6.10 of Ubuntu, Kubuntu and Edubuntu - codenamed "Edgy Eft". OLPC 2B1 Laptop test production started
Quanta Computer has started test production for the US$100 notebook project initiated by the One Laptop per Child (OLPC) research initiative, and samples should be available as early as November, according to sources within Taiwan's IC design sector. [Link]

Fedora Core 6 Release Delayed Again
Over the weekend we ran into a few more bugs with Fedora Core 6 that we decided were important enough to fix. There were some multilib compose issues (wrong packages landing in the wrong dirs), some translation files that would cause tracebacks in things like anaconda (whoops), and a fedora-release package that forgot to enable updates (double whoops). For these reasons and a few others, we decided to respin the release candidate tree and push the release date out another couple of days. [Link]

Linux Kernel Goes Real-Time
Real-Time Base Technology Accepted in Mainline Linux Kernel
Basic support for real-time Linux features is now available in the 2.6.18 kernel and will be further extended in future kernel versions. Core technologies related to real-time performance accepted for inclusion into the mainline Linux kernel source have resulted from the leadership of open source contributors such as Red Hat's Ingo Molnar and TimeSys Senior Open Source Developer Thomas Gleixner. Europe to create open source repository
Portal aims to promote public sector collaboration. The Open Source Observatory and Repository should be operational by the end of 2007.
The European Commission is to create a portal for European public sector bodies to store and share open source application code and exchange open source knowledge.
The Open Source Observatory and Repository (OSOR) will be developed and managed by a consortium led by Unisys.
Mark Shuttleworth Becomes the First Patron of KDE

OpenSUSE 10.1 'Remastered' Released
OpenSUSE 10.1 'Remastered' has been released.

VHS(Video Home System) is 30 years
It's a bit late but VHS(Video Home System) is 30 years old. It was developed by Victor Company of Japan, Limited(JVC) and launched in September 1976. It became a standard format for consumer recording and viewing, after competing in a format war with Sony's Betamax. Today, JVCs announced that it had been awarded the prestigious IEEE Milestone in recognition of its development of the VHS home video format.
Laser TV unveiled
Hailed by its developers as the next revolution in visual technology - a laser television that will make plasma screens obsolete.
Soon-to-be-listed Australian company Arasor International and its US partner Novalux unveiled what they claimed to be the world's first laser television in Sydney today, with a pitch that it would be half the price, twice as good, and use a quarter of the electricity of conventional plasma and LCD TVs. PC-BSD acquired by iXsystems
iXsystems, an enterprise-class hardware solution provider, announced today its acquisition of PC-BSD, a rock solid UNIX operating system based on FreeBSD. PC-BSD is a fully functional desktop operating system running FreeBSD version 6, with a KDE desktop interface and graphical system installer. Its PBI system, developed exclusively for PC-BSD, lets users download and install their applications in a self-extracting and installing format.

Here in the Philippines, It will be officially "full" at 11:13am.
Tonight's full Moon will be almost 12 percent bigger than some of the full Moons this year, according to NASA. The reason: The Moon is near perigee, the point on its slightly out-of-round orbit that is closest to Earth. [Link]

DVD Forum defines China-only HD DVD-ROM spec
Based on the physical format, the Chinese group plans to define a proprietary video format.
Physical specs mostly parallel current HD DVD-ROM specs—a 12-cm disk with two 0.6-mm-thick platters and a single layer with 15-Gbyte capacity. Only the modulation codec differs. For the HD DVD family, ETM (8 data bit/12 channel bit modulation) is used, but the China-only version employs FSM (4 data bit/6 channel bit modulation) codec. [Link]
